Das Experiment by Oliver Hirschbiegel - 2001
An experiment completely goes wrong in the end resulting in the death of two and injuries to many. This is what you get in Director Hirschbiegel’s abstract German thriller Das Experiment (English Title: The Experiment).
Das Experiment is based on the Stanford Prison Experiment conducted during the 70s. Tarek, the taxi driver decides to take part in the 2 weeks - prison experiment after viewing the advertisement in the newspaper. It is big as well as quick money for him. Similarly other people, either for money or for sheer experience, join the experiment. The total numbers of participants are divided into two groups - prisoners and prison guards. The prison guards have to retain order and discipline while the prisoners remain in the makeshift cells. Thumb rule of this experiment is that anyone who uses violence during this experiment will be out of the experiment without being paid. But the situation changes once the prison guards start revolting in real life.
This is not an extraordinary movie; however, Hirschbiege’s work definitely needs applause. Das Experiment takes a U-turn at the end. This German thriller which starts off as a slow paced flick suddenly becomes violent and aggressive and the expression is pretty clear in each and every character of the movie. Built on a slightly abstract theme, Das Experiment is worth a watch.
