I-pill wins over NGO
After the petition of Krupa Profilers, an NGO, being dismissed by the Supreme Court of India, Cipla is rejoicing once again as their emergency contraceptive pill – i-pill got the green signal from the Apex Court. The said NGO filed a petition before Hon’ble Supreme Court against Cipla to ban i-pill as according to the petition, i-pills were a tool for “abortion at home.” However, the Judges held that the allegations brought by the NGO does not hold any footing and is not based on any scientific research. Further the Supreme Court added that such ban of contraceptives will send wrong message across the common people, when such pills are becoming a part of one’s daily life.
The petitioner said that the effect of i-pill is equivalent to abortion as it destroys the foetal life during fertilisation only, and by that time foetus is entitled to a legal status and rights of a living person. Cipla, on the other hand, hold onto their ground firmly that life begins only during implantations. The NGO Krupa Profilers further stated in their petition that usage of such pills can lead to headache, vomiting, nausea etc. But the Apex Court was not satisfied with the argument and hence rejected the petition on the ground that i-pills do not cause abortion. A similar petition has already been dismissed by the Kerala High Court recently.
Cipla has already increased its Net Profit by 72% amounting to Rs.242 crores by mid-2009.
