I Sell the Dead by Glenn McQuaid - 2008
Released in 2008, I Sell the Dead goes back to the 18th century England. Written and directed by Glenn McQuaid, this so called horror flick is very difficult to digest. This casual element of horror present in I Sell the Dead makes the movie kind of funny in certain parts while scary in the other. But unfortunately, when there is an amalgamation of scary and funny parts, I Sell the Dead becomes a disaster.
I Sell the Dead is a story about grave robbers called Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden) who is always accompanied by his young associate Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) all the crime. The actual story in this horror movie begins with Arthur and Willie being caught by the authorities for their crime. Willie is beheaded in the very first scene and Arthur is on the queue. Arthur has one day to live and he claims himself to be innocent and begins to unfold the stories of the past to the priest. From there, I Sell the Dead goes back to flashback describing several incidents related to Arthur and Willie. This horror flick turns into a horror anthology as Arthur confesses about the grave robbing incidents. The stories as narrated by Arthur are not properly linked with one another. However, Arthur and Willie are the basic elements of the stories which always revolve around the theme of grave robbing. Though, these constant random incidents are good enough to confuse the viewers.
The acting in I Sell the Dead is not extraordinary but at no point of time this horror flick will make you feel that you are witnessing poor acting, especially the characters of Arthur and Willie have been portrayed in this horror movie beautifully. The blend of comedy and horror is well handled by Dominic Monaghan. Although the characters are interesting, yet they seem to be not as deep as we expected them to be. The sets of the 18th century of British era are well defined in I Sell the Dead. However, in certain parts of this horror flick, the cg images do not look realistic. May be, this is a deliberate attempt by the director to keep the movie away from the reality. If you like comedy cleverly (or not so) blend into horror, then trying I Sell the Dead won’t do any harm. Watch this horror movie with least expectation, so that you don’t end up with a broken heart.
