Train by Gideon Raff - 2008
Written and directed by Gideon Raff, Train is an amalgamation of ideas lifted from Hostel and Turistas. Nothing new in this story, yet this horror/thriller movie is able to provide couple on intense moments, especially in the beginning, only if you can tolerate torture porn and organ reaping.
Train begins with similar storyline of Hostel. A group of American wrestlers competing in a contest in Russia are lured by sex and drugs and as usual they miss their scheduled train to another destination. They are separated from the main group and decide to take another train. As no one speaks in English at the station, a nice lady doctor Velislava (Koyna Ruseva) tries to help them in buying tickets. After boarding the train, the American wrestlers begin to disappear one by one from the train.
Now this movie, Train is truly graphic in nature, some of the torture scenes were almost not viewable. The dark and rough set design has made the scenes of horrific. However, it is difficult to establish a logic with the storyline as the modus oparandi of the gang is to extract different human organs from the victims and then sell (or donate?) these to needy patients (most of these patients have an Asian look) Now doesn’t this sound familiar with Turistas? I know this is a movie, a horror movie, which often lack logic to a great extent. But Train seems to be totally out of logic. Why someone on earth would torture their victims, keep them alive and remove human organs in a unscientific way, when there are doctors and trained medical professionals present? You don’t really rip off someone’s eyes with a funny looking instruments and then transplant in into a kid’s. The Russian characters in the movie have mostly done overacting, may be it was intentional.
Train is made to attract audience only with extreme usage of graphic tortures and violence (women were punched very hard on their faces too). This thriller flick has a number of plot holes, but then it is a movie. With torture porn making enough cash at the box office, Gideon Raff, the director did not want to lose an opportunity. With a week script and fair acting, Train can go well. If you have liked movies like Hostel and Wrong Turn, then this is the movie for you. A very predictable storyline and repeated gory violence might disturb you to some extent, but if you can handle all that, then board the Train.
