The Car by Elliot Silverstein - 1977
The Car, directed by Elliot Silverstein has been ranked among “The Top 100 Most Enjoyable Bad Movies Ever Made” in the Golden Raspberry Award. Sounds funny? This horror movie of the 70’s was never made with a target of winning the Oscar. What can you really expect from a movie in, which a possessed car runs down random peoples? However, due to certain unknown x-factors, the movie remains in the memory of the viewers. Considering the era in which it was made, The Car definitely won’t disappoint you.
Wade Parent (James Brolin), the sheriff of the town is in charge of the bizarre incidents in which a car runs over and kills random victims on the street. There is no relief for the cyclists and children of the town. The whole town is terrified and as the day passes; the death counts begin to rise.
It was quite tough to believe the story; however, it is only the talent of the director Silverstein that has transformed this strange story into reality. The car ultimately becomes the villain. Though this movie comes under the genre of horror, there is hardly anything scary about the car. We, however, do not know where this car came form? At the beginning of the movie, the car appears. Definitely some parts of this horror movie The Car resemble to the TV series of the 70’s and 80’s. Even at the end of the movie, you will not get to know who is behind the wheel. It’s up to the audiences to interpret the climax of The Car. Now coming back to the design of the car, it was quite poor and unappealing. The director did not give too much of emphasis on the design of the vehicle, I suppose. Calling The Car a horror film can be an insult to the entire horror genre. It is scary or meant to be scary, but does not exact fit into the genre. Ronny Cox and Kathleen Lloyd have done satisfactory work, in spite of being able to be in front of the camera for a shorter period of time. The Car is not an excellent movie to watch, still I will recommend it.
