100 Feet by Eric Red - 2008
Marnie Watson (Famke Janssen) returns home after quite some time. She was in prison for killing her abusive husband, a police officer of New York. Though she has completed her imprisonment period, she needs to remain under house arrest for the next six months. Officer Shanks (Bobby Cannavale), an ex-colleague of Marnie’s dead husband is in charge of her. She is being asked to stay inside the house (within a radius of hundred feet) and a sensor has been attached to her feet to track her movements. But soon Marnie begins to feel the ghostly presence of her dead husband, who is still trying to take revenge and physically harm her even after his death and the saga continues. This is what you get in 100 Feet. Written and directed by Eric Red, this English horror movie is something which we don’t get to see easily, especially in current Hollywood.
100 Feet bears quite some similarities with movies from the Asian horror genre. Asian movies most of the time revolves around ghosts and incidents relating to ghosts, so it is not very unusual to consider this movie as being inspired from any Asian movie. As far as I know, neither this movie is not a lift from any Asian movies nor there is any creepy child in the movie. 100 Feet is nothing extraordinary, but it is a simple drama of the life of a tragic woman, who was finally haunted by the ghost of her husband.
Now if you come to acting, Famke Janssen who played Marnie Watson did an excellent job in the lead. Her acting was realistic and she was perfect in couple of scary scenes. Joey (Ed Westwick), the delivery man as well as Shanks (Bobby Cannavale), the rough and tough NY Cop did their best in their respective roles, and for which they really deserve appreciation. The appearance of the ghost in 100 Feet is just ghost-like. The computer graphics did all the tricks and it resulted in an extraordinary outcome.
This horror movie is entirely shot inside an apartment. It reminds me of two great classics – Polanski’s Repulsion and Hitchcock’s Rope which were both shot inside an apartment. Eric Red selected an old fashioned dark house for 100 Feet. The house sometimes looked so creepy that you will feel like running out from there; now forget that someone has been murdered inside it. The ghost of the dead husband keeps on haunting Marnie and keeps on assaulting her till the end of this horror movie.
The climax of 100 Feet has couple of bloody and violent scenes. The way, Joey was killed was quite disturbing, at least visually. Though I can’t say that 100 Feet is a great movie and blah blah… but definitely it is worth a watch. A simple story, with least amount of twists and coupled with excellent acting of Janssen has made 100 Feet one of my favourite English horror flicks.
