The Maid by Kelvin Tong - 2005
Written and directed by Kelvin Tong, the Maid is a tale of a young girl who gets into trouble after she has failed to show respect to the dead.
The gates of hell open and the spirits are set free on the unsuspecting world during the seventh Chinese month. The dead stays with mortal for a month and people have devised rules to save themselves. The story of the Maid begins with this. However, 18 years old Rosa Dimaano (Alessandra De Rossi) considers it only to be an old wives’ tales. She has come to Singapore from a very small village to work as a maid. She is employed by Mr. Teo (Shucheng Chen) and Mrs. Teo (Huifeng Hong) who have a handicapped son Ah Soon (Benny Soh). Rosa is happy until things begin to change. She has broken many rules on the first day of the seventh month, unknowingly. Her life is turned into a nightmare and she is haunted by a faceless woman and a mutilated boy. But to keep her job, she has no alternative but to keep working as the maid.
The Maid contains all the basic ingredients that are commonly found in most of the Asian horror movies. The storyline and style of presentation is quite mediocre. The initial part of the Maid is able to put the audiences in a state of thrill and suspense, but at the later stage this Asian horror flick seems to be a bit lengthy and boring.
