Raatri by Ram Gopal Verma - 1992
Hardly there are any good Indian horror movies worth discussing in a public domain. Ratri (Hindi title: Raat) directed by Ram Gopal Verma slightly falls outside the category. This Telegu horror movie is definitely a good horror flick produced in India, especially considering the timeframe of the release of this movie. Raatri is the first of its kind in the history of Indian horror cinema and totally away from the what the Ramsey Brothers have been producing so far.
The story of Raatri revolves around the Sharma family which consists of Mr. Sharma (Akash Khurana) and Mrs. Sharma (Rohini Hattangadi), there daughter Mini (Revathi) and their grandson Bunty. Bunty has lost his parents (son and daughter in law of Sharma) in a road accident. The Sharma family witnesses strange incidents after moving into a new house. Soon a dead kitten is discovered and Mini’s best friend is murdered followed by more bizarre incidents. These incidents trouble the peace of the Sharma family.
In spite of being made on a string budget, Raatri is quite an exceptional work in the history of Indian horror movies. This desi horror flick has a very suitable background scores, which makes it more thrilling. The usage of special effects is minimal and it can be considered as one of the best work of Ram Gopal Verma in the particular genre.
