Janghwa Hongryeon by Ji-Woon Kim - 2003
Janghwa, Hongryeon (English title: The Tale of Two Sisters) is one of those rarest horror movies, which not only deals with supernatural elements and mysteries but also beautifully touches every aspect of human emotions and the need of relationships and bondings. This Korean horror movie is directed by Ji-woon Kim and to everyone’s surprise, many critics have considered this as a better movie that the famous J-Horror Ringu. Unfortunately due to lack of efficient publicity, Janghwa, Hongryeon is unable to reach the global audiences as effectively as Ringu did.
This emotional horror based drama movie starts with the tale of two sisters Su-Jeong (Bae Soo-mi) and Geun Yeong (Bae Soo-yeon). One of the sisters, after spending quite some time in an asylum and recovering from her mental illness returns home. There is immense love between these two sisters. They live with their father (Bae Moo-hyeon) and step-mother in a house located in the outskirt of a city. As each day begins to pass, situations grow more complex. It seems that the obsessive step-mother is ever ready to make their lives miserable. Coupled with this cruel behaviour of their step mother, these two sisters begin to witness bizarre incidents with the presence of ghosts. Janghwa, Hongryeon takes a full turn during the climax and soon the whole story twists and develops into something tremendously unexpected.
This Asian horror flick has a very bold storyline, which touches every heart and keeps you anticipating till the end. The cinematography and direction are of pretty high standard and great effort in acting especially by the sister duo is excellent. It is really difficult to predict the end and understand the whole movie, and admire it, unless and until you watch the full movie. Janghwa, Hongryeon is a perfect combination of horror, emotion and drama. It is a great movie and you should watch it.
Watch the trailer of Janghwa, Hongryeon.
